Amniocentesis, a procedure in which a small sample of amniotic fluid is drawn out of the uterus by a needle inserted in the abdomen, is able to determine the sex of the unborn child as well as predict several potential abnormalities of the unborn, particularly the risk of Down syndrome. Increasingly, this process is being used as a gate to determine whether or not a child should live.
