South Millvale Avenue Bridge reopens early[]
- By The Tribune-Review, Tuesday, February 12, 2008
Construction crews Monday reopened the South Millvale Avenue Bridge about two months ahead of schedule.
The span is a shortcut between Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield and Baum Boulevard in Oakland. It cost $5.5 million to replace the bridge deck, repair its aging substructure, install protective fencing, put up a green pedestrian hand railing and make other improvements.
The bridge closed in April. It was supposed to take a year to fix.
The bridge, built in 1893, previously was rehabilitated in 1928. It had a 20-ton vehicle weight restriction before the latest renovation, but that restriction has been removed, said Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to reopen the bridge.
