Background[]

Title 1[]

Title 1 is the largest federally funded elementary and secondary educaiton program. It evolved from the Elementary and Secondary Educaiton act (ESEA) of 1965, which was enacted as part of PresidentLyndon Johnson's War on Poverty. the program provides for supplementary academic assistance to economically and educationally disadvantaged children.

Mission[]

The National Coalition of title 1 / Chapter 1 Parents helps economically disadvantaged parents to develop the necessary skills and abilities needed to make sound decisions that result in improving the quality of their children's education.

The National Parent Center[]

In 1976 the Carnegie Corporation awarded the National Coalition of Title I / Chapter 1 Parents a grant to establish the National Parent Center. The Center administers the NCTIC1P programs and serves as a clearinghouse for information concerning parents involvement and education for disadvantaged children.

Purpose[]

To provide information to parents that will enable them to help their children to be successful as students as well as adult members of society.

To promote an exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas between parents and educators concerning education programs.

To inform parents about the laws, regulations and guidelines of the Title I program.

To develop resources and materials that assist parents and others to understand their roles in the Title I program.

To serve as a link between parents, the US Department of Education, state education agencies and local education agencies.

To provide parents with information about their right to be involved in federal education programs.

To provide technical assistance to parents in their attempts to organize into an effective force tin their local communities.

To monitor federal agency activity which may adversely affect education programs and the role of parents in those programs.

To act as an advocate for parents in federal agency matters such as the development of rules and regulations.
