PTEP is an outgrowth of the environmental justice movement - a social justice movement in pursuit of equal rights and equal protection. Our mission is to engage, educate, and empower African American residents, groups, community and church leaders to become active players in transportation policy, equity issues, investments, and regional planning.

An African American Community Capacity Building Project

Transporation is more than just getting from one place to another. It directly impacts your:

  • Economic condition
  • Education
  • Health
  • Quality of life

Espcially for those who are transit dependent, the quality of public transportation can affect one's ability to get to jobs, schools, and even hospitals.

Mission[]

To engage African American residents, groups, community and church leaders to become active players in transportation policy, equity issues, investments, and regional planning. We will do this though educating the communities on transportation issues, building coalititions and partnerships, commissioning transportation papers and taking on key initiatives. This is to ensure long-term sustainable, efficient and enviornmentally friendly transportation for the African American and economically disadvantage communities throughout Pittsburgh Region.

Vision[]

That African American residents will contribuet to the decision-making process regarding transporation equity as well as benefit from the overall opportunities associated with transporation, community enhancement and the enhanced work opportunties associated with sufficient community transportation.

To create a condition for equity and input in the decision-making process for African American reesidents in the transportation sector that produces opportunities for healthy work opportunities supported by the transportation system.

Objectives[]

  • To empower African American groups on transportation decision making
  • To inform local Pittsburgh residents andcommunity leaders about national transportation equity, transit discrimination trends and citizens' response
  • To organize a local transportation equity network
  • To impact transportation "visining" planning, decision making, and transportation investments in Pittsburgh area
  • To provide local residents and leaders with case studiens that illustrate the common elements of successfultransportation equity initiatives.
  • To document the impact of the region's transportation policies on transportation investments and equity.
  • To serve as an information clearinghouse on transporation equity policies and practices.



Bus Riders Union[]

In a BRU, members use their power as paying customers of public transporation and tax-payers to win real vctories for collective bus riders -- doing everything from reducing fares to getting better buses on the road.

Youth Policy Institute[]

The unique initiative is designed to train the next generation of young people to become active leaders in public policy planning and development.

Diesel Fuel Study & Campaign[]

Research has shown that diesel fueled vehicles (such as buses) are harmful to people's health -- causing asthma in our children and lung cancer in adults, among other problems.
